• Project Type: The inception of the “Merschel Plaza” project was an effort by the City of Winston-Salem to honor Council Member Wanda Merschel for her dedication and contribution to the citizens of Winston-Salem over 16 years. The City of Winston-Salem’s Recreation and Parks Department charged MLA with preparing concept/master plans for the Plaza and creating image boards to present to the Council Member. The Plaza design focused on utilizing the open green space along Fourth Street and creating a gathering space/overlook with a blend of different materials (ie unique materials like solar pavers). Upon approval of the Plaza by the City, MLA was then asked to prepare construction documents for the Plaza and facilitate the bidding process. With a tight construction timeline, MLA worked hand-in-hand with the City and the contractors to complete the Plaza work within 4-5 weeks, for the grand opening on August 22, 2014.
